teaching English in Budapest, Hungary
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hungary - English
website - Hungarian
website
Work permits, VISA information, travel in the EU... if you don't
know about what you need to know, here's the most official source
of information, in English. Over simplifying things a bit, it can
be said that there are two set of rules now, one for EU members,
and one for the rest of the world. There's also an alternate
website address, if the domain name is hard to remember.
World Health Organization: Hungary - English
website
For those concerned over health issues and medical treatment, although
such official information can be somewhat misleading. First things
first, get travel insurance before coming here. Otherwise you may
end up paying a lot of money even for very basic things, like subscriptions.
The laws regarding Health Care in Hungary are constantly changing,
but if going to private clinics, you won't really have to deal with
the administration.
Via-Lingua, TEFL certificates, Job guidance - English
website
Via Lingua is one of the few local companies that offer teacher
training and a CTEFL certificate, along with helping people - who
have completed the TEFL course - to find jobs that suit their needs
and skills. The average course is 120 hours long, in which you also
get to teach 10 hours in local schools, and after you've successfully
"graduated" their job guidance staff will seek out positions
for you to fill in.
Sharing One Language: Volunteering - English
website
For those who wish to travel while doing volunteer work -- which
is in some aspects the same, in some aspects completely different
from just TEFL jobs -- this website may be a very valuable source
of information, and even current news. SOL launches courses led
by volunteers in various countries of Eastern Europe, which of course
includes schools in Hungary as well. If you'd like to be a part
of a volunteer community, worry less about the details, but in return,
not really be able to do entirely as you please.
Bridges of Education - English
website
The organization has helped nearly a thousand teachers, organized
several dozens of language learning camps, and specializes in providing
helpful, sometimes vital information on travel in the Eastern European
region. They take their task very seriously, and thus their website
is a gold mine of informative articles, actual contact information,
FAQs and useful links. While their 2007 plans did not include Hungary,
they have some extensive experience with this country which they
probably would share in addition to the tips and hints you'd find
online. Pay them a visit, there are some generic information ( including
on ESL in Asia, which is again, of interest to ELTlabs ).
Budapest
Hotel, accommodation map - English
Website - Szállás
( hungarian )
Pretty fun use of the Google map feature, you can pinpoint the
place you want to book a room in seeing the usual Google map and
satellite image. Which - in combination with some local knowledge
and, or a Budapest travel guide book - can be a very good idea!
Stay near downtown, minutes away from everything at the expense
of ... well staying in the busy, noisy central area... or stay in
a greenbelt apartment hotel ( aparthotel? ) to be miles away from
'where it happens', but watch greenery, calm hills, squirrels and
birds from your window. The usual choices. Some downtown rooms can
be cheap, some suburban hotels can be expensive and vica versa,
so the choice is yours.
